In the northeast region of the Cesar State in Colombia there are fodder legumes which are adapted to dry climates and whose ecological and nutritional characteristics are unknown, as the case of the Acacia riparia. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of this species as forage plant in the specific zone of the Cesar State. A botanical inventory was done using a sampling unit of 0.1 ha to determine the richness of the woody plants with a girth at breast height of at least 7 cm. Nutritional characteristics of A. riparia leaves were determined by bromatological analysis and in vitro digestibility. The research showed the presence of different fodder legumes where A. riparia was one of the three more representative species of this region, with a relatively high importance value index (IVI=0,192) only under Prosopis juliflora (IVI=0.750) y Samanea saman (IVI=0.655). The species contains 22.6 % protein and 50.8 % digestibility in vitro. The ecological importance and nutritional characteristics of this species as potential forage for ruminants was demonstrated.

The soil properties are a vital support for development of plants and organisms, and affect the crop productivity; nevertheless, the agriculture managing can change the soil quality. The objective of this research was to characterize properties of the soil in 13 productive units (PU) in the Center of Agroindustrial Formation, Campoalegre County, Huila State, Colombia, and their relationship with the production system. Samples were taken at three representative points of each PU, to a depth of 60 cm, from which organic matter (OM), pH, electrical conductivity, bulk density (Bd) and total porosity were determined. The software InfoStat was used for data analysis based on Fisher LSD variance test and a multivariate conglomerate method. It was found that soils were heterogeneous, attributed to the variability of management and established crops. The main differences were found in the degree of soil compaction, due to the higher Da in the system with coffee crop, and in the higher OM content observed in the agroforestry system with passion fruit, banana and cocoa crops. Cocoa productive unit and the agroforestry system, conformed by fruit crops and cocoa, were associated by variables of pH and organic matter with impacts on soil physical and chemical properties.

The remarkable increase in the productivity of many crops during the twentieth century can be attributed to genetic gains achieved through crop breeding. Cassava has also benefited from technological inputs in the area of breeding. For this reason, the National Institute for Agricultural Research established a cassava-breeding program, through a phenotypic recurrent selection following the vegetative propagation of the crop. With the purpose of evaluating yield stability of 16 varieties of cassava, uniform yield trials were set under two environmental conditions (production areas of Aragua and Cojedes States). The variables evaluated were vegetative growth, and fresh weight and number of roots. The results showed that there was a highly significant genotype by environment interaction for the variables associated with vegetative growth, but the variables associated to production were affected separately by genotype and environment. Seven of the genotypes resulted the best due to their high weight in commercial roots (16 Mg·ha-1), while the environment of Cojedes State was the best for most variables associated to yield. A feasible explanation for this trend is the impact of the environment on the physiological and nutritional status of the planting material and/or epigenetic effects. The genotypes Inocol 7, Guajira 2, Meven 36-13 and Guajira 6 can be selected for the evaluation of uniform performance tests motivated to superior behavior in terms of commercial roots and top fresh weight.

Cadmium (Cd2+) is a pollutant of great environmental concern due to its multiple origins (natural and anthropogenic), the ability to accumulate in organs and tissues, and the deleterious effects it can cause in organisms. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Cd2+ exposure on Sphagneticola trilobata plants. We evaluated the accumulation of Cd2+, the plant biomass, the content of chlorophyll, soluble sugars, proteins and the production of malondialdehyde and thiols as markers of oxidative stress and tolerance, respectively. The Cd2+ content in the plant organs increased proportionally to the concentration of CdCl2 in the environment, reaching accumulatively 1306, 193 and 52 mg·kg-1 in roots, stems and leaves, respectively. Some toxic effects such as a decrease in the root biomass, alterations in the polypeptide pattern of the leaves, reduction in the chlorophyll content, and an increase in the amount of malondialdehyde was observed at higher concentrations of CdCl2. An increase in the content of soluble sugars was also seen, which are markers of tolerance associated with a protection mechanism against the oxidative stress. In addition, an increase on heavy metals chelating thiols such as L-cysteine, glutathione and various phytochelatins was obtained in the plant roots. Our results demonstrated that S. trilobata is capable of accumulating Cd2+ and possesses tolerance mechanisms that make this plant an excellent option to be used for Cd2+ phytoremediation.; El cadmio (Cd2+) es un contaminante que genera mucha preocupación a nivel ambiental debido a sus múltiples orígenes (naturales y antropogénicos), la capacidad de acumularse en órganos y tejidos y los efectos nocivos que puede causar en los organismos.
