Una distinción necesaria y largamente olvidada en Venezuela BIFANO, Claudio Se hace un análisis sobre el desarrollo de los estudios de cuarto nivel en Venezuela, desde sus orígenes hasta los años recientes, tomando en cuenta el papel de las Universidades y la influencia que tuvo el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas CONICIT en su concepción. Se hace referencia a la Normativa que regula la creación y acreditación de los postgrados en Venezuela y sobre esa base se propone la distinción entre programas de postgrado para la investigación y postgrados de profesionalización a los niveles de Maestría y Doctorado.; An analysis is made of the development of fourth level studies in Venezuela, from its origins to recent years, taking into account the role of the Universities and the influence that the National Council for Scientific Research CONICIT had in its conception. Reference is made to the Regulations that regulate the creation and accreditation of postgraduate courses in Venezuela and on that basis, the distinction between postgraduate programs for research and postgraduate courses for professionalization at the Master's and Doctorate levels is proposed.

Luego, se presentan los resultados de la consulta realizada a empresas y universidades, los cuales permiten tener una primera visión sobre el sistema, mostrando la necesidad de plantear cambios significativos en la formación, la I+D+i y la práctica profesional de las ingenierías.; In the first part, some of the causes that have led to a profound destructuring of the Venezuelan SNCTI are described, with national engineering capacities in the universities and in industry and services being tremendously affected. Then, the results of the consultation with companies and universities are presented, which allow having a first vision of the system, showing the need to propose significant changes in training, R&D&i and the professional practice of engineering.

Las ingenierías son responsables importantes de estas transformaciones, experimentando, a su vez, cambios que trascienden lo tecnológico-científico ante la necesidad de orientar sus prácticas a la sustentabilidad. La ingeniería venezolana, afronta el desafío de asumir estas transformaciones en medio de una severa crisis, teniendo, además, la responsabilidad de contribuir a su superación.; Convergent technologies generate disruptions that induce unprecedented changes on global sociotechnical structure, including the instances responsible of generation and transference of knowledge. Engineering has a crucial responsibility in these changes, undergoing, in turn, changes that transcend the technological-scientific because of the need to guide their practices toward sustainability. Venezuelan engineering faces the challenge to assume these transformations in the midst of a severe crisis, also having the responsibility to contribute to overcoming it.

Through inquiries to experts and the application of structural analysis, key policies and strategies to strengthen teaching and R&D capabilities in Higher Education Institutions were enunciated. Their implementation could contribute to the recovery of the country's industry and services and face technological transformations inherent to the deployment of the 4i with a perspective of sustainability.
