LA CIUDADANTE O LA ESTRATIFICACIÓN SOCIAL DE LA MUJER VENEZOLANA DEL SIGLO XIX

Abstract

Esta investigación tiene como objetivo reconstruir interpretativamente el significado léxico-discursivo del vocablo ciudadante, usado por el funcionario de la Provincia de Guayana en 1832 para referirse a una mujer de ciertas características socioeconómicas que la distinguen de otros dos grupos de féminas guayanesas. Para ello, se emplea el marco teórico-metodológico que ofrece el Análisis Histórico del Discurso, que hace converger el Enfoque Histórico y el Enfoque Discursivo. Por este motivo, el estudio histórico-discursivo de esta voz seleccionada resulta una puerta de acceso válida para comenzar a comprender las implicaciones socio-culturales y políticas que le subyacen a los significados léxico-discursivos de la misma. Se concluye que las formas de tratamiento, empleadas en las comunicaciones gubernamentales, jerarquizan a la mujer del siglo XIX en tres clases socioeconómicas; y, al mismo tiempo, el término ciudadante podría ser el antecedente más remoto del derecho al voto femenino en Venezuela.

This research aims at interpretatively reconstructing the lexical-discursive meaning of the word ciudadante, used by the official of the Province of Guiana in 1832 to refer to a woman of certain socioeconomic characteristics distinguishing her from two other groups of Guyanese women. For this, the theoreticalmethodological framework offered by the Historical Analysis of Discourse is used, which makes the Historical and the Discursive Approach concur. For this reason, the historical-discursive study of this selected word is a valid gateway to begin to understand the socio-cultural and political implications underlieing its lexicaldiscursive meanings. It is concluded that the forms of address, used in government communications, hierarchize nineteenth-century women into three socioeconomic classes; and, at the same time, the term ciudadantecould be the most remote antecedent of women’s right to vote in Venezuela.
