El reto de las metáforas deportivas:Traducción automática vs. Traducción humana

Abstract

En este trabajo se estudian las diferentes posibilidades de traducir expresiones metafóricas deportivas. Tomando como base ‘The TV-Corpus’ y el corpus recopilado en trabajos anteriores sobre series de TV por Internet, se llevan a cabo una selección de expresiones idiomáticas deportivas especialmente difíciles de traducir (p. ej., to knock it out of the park). El presente análisis se centra en la traducción de este tipo de expresiones realizada por humanos, por un lado y por sistemas de TA, por otro. El objetivo del análisis es estudiar la dimensión metafórica de la expresión y comparar los resultados obtenidos por las diferentes traducciones. Finalmente, discutimos el alcance y los límites de los sistemas de TA para realizar traducciones adecuadas y precisas de metáforas y expresiones idiomáticas, en comparación con las posibilidades de la traducción humana. Los resultados muestran que las expresiones metafóricas e idiomáticas continúan siendo un punto ciego de la TA, por lo que una traducción de calidad depende del factor humano, bien sea mediante post-edición o traducción humana directa.

This paper studies different possibilities for translating sports metaphors in fictional TV series. The study focuses on ‘The TV-Corpus’ and a corpus compiled by the author in previous works on Internet TV series. The analysis focuses on the translation of this type of expression carried out by humans, on the one hand, and machines, on the other. I compare the translations of these systems with some human translations provided in the translated subtitles broadcast in the corresponding series from Netflix, Amazon Prime, and others. The analysis aims to study the metaphorical dimension of the expression and compare the results obtained by the different translations performed by the MT systems and by a human translator. Finally, I discuss the scope and limits of MT systems to achieve adequate and accurate translations of metaphors and idiomatic expressions compared with the possibilities of human translation. The analysis results show that metaphorical and idiomatic expressions remain a blind spot of machine translation. Hence, a quality translation depends on the human factor, either through post-editing or direct human translation.
