Planificación de drenajes urbanos sostenibles como herramientas para mejorar el metabolismo de la ciudad de Mérida-Venezuela

Abstract

El desarrollo de las ciudades está limitado por el espacio físico y la capacidad de su infraestructura. La ciudad de Mérida ha tenido gran crecimiento poblacional, su infraestructura tiene más de medio siglo y se encuentra al límite de capacidad, ameritando renovarla completamente o restringir el crecimiento de la ciudad. De todas las infraestructuras, se evalúa la de los sistemas de drenaje urbano, entendiendo que su mal funcionamiento puede ser el causante del colapso de la ciudad en periodos de lluvia. Esta investigación introduce al estudio de la ciudad la teoría del metabolismo urbano en relación a las lluvias, automatizando su cuantificación, mediante el sistema de modelado Storm Water Management Model de Us EPA (SWMM), con la finalidad de desarrollar una metodología aplicable a cualquier ciudad e infraestructura. El estudio se limita a un sector del área de servicio del colector 1-AVT, que abarca desde la Plaza Chaplin hasta Glorias Patrias, cuyo sistema de drenaje urbano no funciona eficientemente ya que más del 90% de la lluvia generada no es canalizada correctamente, por lo cual en periodos de lluvia las vías del sector se convierten en canales. El modelado en SWMM ha permitido identificar el volumen de lluvia excedente y procurar su disminución evaluando diferentes escenarios, con criterios de drenajes urbanos sostenibles, lo que permite generar lineamientos de planificación a largo plazo para garantizar aumentar la vida útil de la actual infraestructura de drenajes del sector de estudio.

The development of cities is limited by the physical space and the capacity of its infrastructure. The city of Mérida has had great population growth, its infrastructure is more than half a century old and is at its capacity limit, deserving a complete renovation or restricting the growth of the city. Of all the infrastructures, the urban drainage systems are evaluated, understanding that their malfunction can be the cause of the collapse of the city in periods of rain. This research introduces the theory of urban metabolism in relation to rainfall to the study of the city, automating its quantification, through the US EPA Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) modeling system, in order to develop a methodology applicable to any city. and infrastructure. The study is limited to a sector of the service area of collector 1-AVT, which covers from Plaza Chaplin to Glorias Patrias, whose urban drainage system does not work efficiently since more than 90% of the rain generated is not channeled correctly. Therefore, in periods of rain, the roads of the sector become canals. SWMM modeling has made it possible to identify the excess rainfall volume and try to reduce it by evaluating different scenarios, with sustainable urban drainage criteria, which allows generating long-term planning guidelines to guarantee increasing the useful life of the current drainage infrastructure of the study area
