Género, clase y migración: trabajadoras pahuatecas en el Nuevo New South

Abstract

Con fundamento en información etnográfica y datos estadísticos, este artículo examina la combinación de esquemas tradicionales y emergentes de movilidad en un ciclo corto en el que la migración originada en el Municipio de Puahuatlán, Puebla, se masifica, acelera y decae abruptamente en los años de la gran crisis económica y financiera (2007-2008). Se perfilan esos patrones en el trasfondo de dos procesos fundamentales: la llamada latinización del New South estadounidense y mayores restricciones y controles fronterizos factores que, conjugadamente, apuntalaron la transición de un flujo migratorio laboral/circular integrado en su mayoría por hombres “solos”, hacia una migración de poblamiento en el corredor Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, en Carolina del Norte. La noción de “migración acelerada” permite pensar la relación entre la velocidad de las transiciones en la dinámica migratoria en una zona del centro de México, antes orientada a la producción agrícola, y el reposicionamiento del sureste estadounidense en la economía global, proceso que originó una incrementada demanda de trabajadores baratos, disciplinados y desorganizados. Mi interés es mostrar que la migración, como experiencia de clase, está moldeada por el género. Emprendo esa tarea al analizar la trayectoria de vida de una joven pahuateca migrante a Carolina del Sur en los años en los que se concentró la participación de las mujeres en un flujo migratorio originado en ese municipio de la Sierra Norte de Puebla

Based on ethnographic fieldwork and statistical data, this article examines the connection between old and new migration flows from the Municipality of Puahuatlán, in the Mexican state of Puebla, during a short time cycle in which they went from being massive and accelerated migration to decline in the midst of the great economic and financial crisis (2007-2008). Analysis of these changes focuses two fundamental processes: the so-called Latinization of the New South in the U.S., and the enforcement of U.S-Mexico border and immigration control, for they have contributed to strengthen the transition of a labor flow of male migration, of circular nature and dominated by men “alone”, towards a settlement migration in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill corridor, in North Carolina. The concept of “accelerated migration” is proposed here to reflect on the connection between the rapid transformation of the migratory dynamics in an area of Central Mexico, formerly oriented towards agricultural production, and the repositioning of the Southeast in the United States within the global economy, that have led to the increased demand for a cheap, disciplined and disorganized labor force. In particular, the article will show the extent to which migration, as part of a class experience, is shaped by gender. To do this, it examines the life trajectory of a young female migrant from Puahuatlán to South Carolina, during the period in which the migration of women from that municipality of the Sierra Norte of Puebla was particularly significant.
