The different stages of the development of science and technology in Venezuela are described and analyzed. It starts with the late emergence of the colonial University in Venezuela in 1721, under the Spanish scholastic tradition, configuring an initial stage, characterized by a significant backwardness, despite the visit of European naturalist travelers, among which Alexander von Humboldt stands out. The first stage begins with the decree of the Central University in 1827 by Simón Bolívar and José María Vargas that opens the doors to the entry into the country of the positivist movement, which ends up taking root in the national academic world towards the end of the 19th century. In this period, Luis Daniel Beauperthuy stands out with the formulation of a new medical paradigm. Research activity during the first part of the 19th century was relatively scarce until 1950, when large projects emerged with a sense of institutionalization and professionalization of national scientific and technical activity, among which the creation of the Venezuelan Institute of Neurology and Research should be mentioned (IVNIC), the Faculties of Science and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICIT). Francisco De Venanci's project for a public, autonomous, and democratic university together with the configuration of an Ethos for the Venezuelan scientific researcher by Marcel Roche from the IVIC, successor to Humberto Fernández Morán's IVNIC, gave rise to the great boom in science and technology in Venezuela during the second half of the 20th century, a period when the social and human sciences were enabled along with technological innovation in the oil industry. All this remaining at the service of the community through the popularization of innovative mechanisms for the dissemination of science. Sadly, in the 21st century, those great achievements have fallen short because of chimerical political actions that have led to science and technology activity in its decline.en-US
