dc.descriptionLas diferencias individuales en lo que se refiere a los procesos cognoscitivos (memoria, la atención, la comprensión, el aprendizaje, etc.), han generado entre los psicólogos cognoscitivos diversas interrogantes que los han llevado a considerar e investigar aspectos que van más allá de la cognición misma; de esta forma ha surgido el término “metacognición”, que se refiere al conocimiento y el control que tiene el individuo sobre sus propias actividades de pensamiento y sobre cómo estos conocimientos influyen en la ejecución de las tareas que él realiza (Morales, 1994). El presente artículo se propone exponer la definición, el desarrollo histórico y la evaluación de la metacognición, así como las investigaciones que han relacionado a la metacognición con algunos procesos cognitivos. METACOGNITION AND METACOGNITION AREASAbstractThe individual differences regarding the cognitive processes (memory, attention, understanding, learning, etc.) have generated several questions among cognitive psychologists that led them to consider and investigate aspects beyond cognition. The concept of “metacognition” refers to the knowledge and control that the individual has about his own thinking activities and how this knowledge has an influence on the tasks he develops (Morales, 1994). This article presents the definition, historical development and the evaluation of metacognition as well as the investigations that have related metacognition to some cognitive processes. es-ES
