Water deficit effect on biomass and nitrogen accumulation in soybean (Glycinemax (L.) Merr.) inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicumABSTRACTWater deficit is a limiting factor for the development of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), and Rhizobium inoculation is acommon practice to improve soybean yield. Therefore, it was studied the effect of water deficit on biomass accumulation andleaf nitrogen in soybean plants in vegetative and reproductive stages, to determine whether inoculation with Bradyrhizobiumjaponicum is a practice that counteracts the effect of water deficit at the level of the root system, nitrogen content andbiomass of seeds. From a batch of 112 plants of soybean cv. FP90-6103 grown under controlled conditions, 56 plants were inoculated. At the sowing moment and 70 days after sowing (das), 28 inoculated and 28 non-inoculated plants wereinduced water deficit. This led to the implementation of four treatments: inoculated without water deficit (T0), notinoculated without water deficit (T1), inoculated with water deficit (T2) and not inoculated with water deficit (T3). Undervegetative stages, inoculation enhanced the accumulation of total biomass per plant and leaf area until 23 d after sowing;however, it did not contribute to the decrease of the negative effects of water deficit on biomass accumulation on reproductivestages, nitrogen content in leaves and length of the root system. Moreover, water deficit affected the accumulation ofbiomass in seed nitrogen content leaves and surface of the root system. Water deficit affected seed biomass, leaf nitrogencontent, and root system surface. T1 showed a 23% reduction in seed biomass (9.86 g), regarding plants in T0 (12.76 g),indicating that under water supply, inoculation promoted biomass accumulation in seeds. In R7, plants under water deficit(T0 y T1) showed less nitrogen content in leaves, independently from inoculation. At 96 das, root surface of inoculatedplants without water deficit (24.38 m2), differed from not inoculated plants with water deficit (21.05 m2). Plants underwater deficit showed a longer root system, but had less root surface.Key words: biomass, Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Glycine max, water deficit. es-ES
