dc.descriptionResumen:Una vez asegurada la independencia de España y de la Gran Colombia, el país iniciaba su refundación con un nuevo marco legal y un orden institucional como nunca antes había existido. Patria y nación, histórica y semánticamente sinónimos o próximos, devienen en términos complementarios porque nación como concepto empezaba a aproximarse cada vez más a Estado, según la visión liberal dominante. En ese contexto de cambios conceptuales profundos, la Iglesia católica no hallaba fácil acomodo porque tendía a asumir la nación como patria y no como Estado: tal incomprensión influyó en el desenlace trágico del extrañamiento de Monseñor Ramón Ignacio Méndez y de otros prelados a lo largo del siglo XIX. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo busca ampliar la esfera de comprensión del conflicto entre Iglesia y Estado en el siglo XIX, tradicionalmente asociado a la Ley de Patronato, examinando las tensiones discursivas del momento y poniendo el foco en esa importante variación del significado de Nación.Palabras Clave: Patria, Nación, Estado, Iglesia Católica, Liberalismo.Abstract:Once the independence of Spain and Great Colombia had been assured, the country began its refoundation with a new legal framework and an institutional order like never before. Fatherland and nation, historically and semantically synonymous or near, become in complementary terms because nation as a concept began to approach increasingly state, according to the dominant liberal view. In this context of profound conceptual changes, the Catholic Church could not find easy accommodation because it tended to assume the nation as a country and not as a State: such incomprehension influenced the tragic outcome of the estrangement of Monsignor Ramon Ignacio Méndez and other prelates throughout the XIX century. In this sense, the present work seeks to expand the sphere of understanding of the conflict between Church and State in the nineteenth century, traditionally associated with the Law of Patronage, examining the discursive tensions of the moment and putting the focus on that important variation of the meaning of Nation.Key Words: Fatherland, Nation, State, Catholic Church, Liberalism.  es-ES
