dc.descriptionResumen:En la América septentrional se fundaron dos universidades jesuitas en la época colonial: Mérida de Yucatán en 1624 y Guatemala en 1640. Sin embargo, los estudios historiográficos de ellas son muy escasos. El presente ensayo da cuenta de aspectos básicos del funcionamiento de la Universidad de Mérida de Yucatán. Describe su comienzo, las cátedras que impartió y los grados que otorgaron, los colegios, su financiamiento y algunos problemas que enfrentó. Como Yucatán no tuvo audiencia en su territorio, la universidad buscó ayuda de la de Santa Fe de Bogotá para utilizar sus reglamentos para el otorgamiento de grados, que fueron aprobados en los tribunales reales neogranadinos. Los permisos papales generales para su fundación fueron los mismos en ambas universidades, primero el de Gregorio XV por diez años y posteriormente el de Pío IV hasta su cierre en 1767. A manera de apéndice se editan los autos de fundación de la universidad yucateca en 1624.Palabras Clave: Universidad Colegios Estudios Grados Jesuita Mérida Yucatán Colonia siglo XVII-XVIII.Abstract:In Northern America two Jesuit universities were founded during colonial times: Mérida de Yucatán in 1624 and Guatemala in 1640. Nevertheless, historiographical studies on them are very scarce. This essay accounts for basic aspects of the functioning of the University of Mérida in Yucatán. It describes its beginning, the subjects it taught and the degrees it awarded, the colleges, its financing and some problems it faced. As Yucatán did not count with a royal court within its territory, the university searched for help from the one in Santa Fe in Bogotá in order to use the same set of rules for awarding degrees, which were approved by the Nueva Granada's Royal Court. The Pope's general charter for their founding were the same for both universities, first the one of Gregory XV and then the one of Pío IV until their closure in 1767.
