dc.descriptionWith the founding of the Society of Jesus in the 16th century, scientific and social research was strengthened. This religious community focused on peripheral destinations, travelling to remote places with its gospel message and, additionally, with a characteristic spirit of curiosity and systematization. Evidence of this is the extensive river mapping that the missionaries produced on their journeys away from the main cities where they established their operational bases in the New Kingdom of Granada. One of these bases was pharmacological, in view of their enlightened knowledge and their capacity to investigate new medicines in regions such as the Orinoquia. This article presents the context of their establishment in the territories of today’s Colombia.en-US
dc.descriptionCon la fundación de la Compañía de Jesús en el siglo XVI se fortaleció la indagación científica y social. Esta comunidad religiosa se centró en destinos periféricos, viajando a lugares recónditos con su mensaje evangélico y, adicionalmente, con un espíritu característico de curiosidad y sistematización. Evidencia de ello es la extensa cartografía fluvial que produjeron los misioneros en sus viajes lejos de las ciudades principales en donde instauraron sus bases operativas en el Nuevo Reino de Granada. Una de estas bases fue de orden farmacológico, atendiendo a su conocimiento ilustrado y a su capacidad de indagación de nuevos medicamentos en regiones como la Orinoquia. Se presenta en este artículo el contexto de su instalación en los territorios hoy colombianos.es-ES
