LÓPEZ CONTRERAS Y EL BASEBALL COMO INSTRUMENTO DE CONTROL SOCIAL

Abstract

El artículo estudia un objeto poco explorado en la historia. El béisbol jugado fuera del estadio. El texto pretende analizar el papel jugado por el juego de pelota en el período de gobierno del general Eleazar López Contreras, específicamente en su lucha contra los sindicatos en los años 1938 y 1939. Es una investigación documental basada en los conceptos de los estudios comunicación–deporte – sociedad. Argumentan que la cobertura deportiva, además de informar sobre las incidencias del evento deportivo en sí, refleja o construye significados alrededor de los valores e ideología dominante en una sociedad dada. Para tener una visión más amplia de la relación del general con el baseball, daremos un vistazo al juego de pelota desde su introducción al país hasta el lapso investigado. También, analizaremos el discurso pronunciado por él en la celebración del campeonato obtenido por el equipo 29 de Julio Militar en 1927. Esta orientación pudiera originar otra comprensión de la historia del Rey de los Deportes en Venezuela y su alcance.

The article studies an object little explored in history. Baseball played outside the stadium. The text intends to analyze the role played by the ball game in the period of the government of General Eleazar López Contreras, specifically in its fight against the unions in the years 1938 and 1939. It is a documentary research based on the concepts of communication studies sport - society. They argue that sports coverage, in addition to reporting on the incidents of the sporting event itself, reflects or constructs meanings around the values and dominant ideology in a given society. In order to have a broader view of the general’s relationship with baseball, we will take a look at the ball game from its introduction to the country until the time investigated. Also, we will analyze the speech delivered by him in the celebration of the championship obtained by the team July 29 Military in 1927. This orientation could originate another understanding of the history of the King of Sports in Venezuela and its scope.
