dc.descriptionThe Index of Ortodontics Treatment Need (IOTN) allows quantifying and determining the need for treatment depending on the severity of the malocclusion indicators. Objective: To determine ortodontic treatment need in a group of pediatric patients, who attend the Pediatric Dentistry service of the Centro Médico Docente La Trinidad (CMDLT), in the period from March 2020 to August 2021, using the IOTN index. Materials and Methods: This research is descriptive and cross-sectional, in which the need for orthodontic treatment was determined using the dental component of the IOTN index. The sample was selected for convenience. After obtaining informed consent / assent, a clinical and photographic evaluation was carried out in patients aged 5 to 18 years, who had mixed or permanent dentition. 4 observers participated. The data were recorded and analyzed with descriptive variables. Results: The sample consisted of 46 patients, with an equitable distribution between sexes. 39% of the sample presented no (28%) or little (11%) need for treatment; while 61% do require orthodontic treatment (moderate need 33%, high need 28% and great need 4%). The most prevalent indicators of malocclusion were overbite (23.9%) and tooth displacement (21.7%). Conclusion: The use of the IOTN index reflects a high need for orthodontic treatment in the pediatric patients studied, mainly derived from deep overbite and dental crowding.en-US
dc.descriptionEl Índice de Necesidad de Tratamiento Ortodóncico (IOTN) permite cuantificar y determinar la necesidad de tratamiento dependiendo de la severidad de los indicadores de maloclusión. Objetivo: determinar la necesidad de tratamiento ortodóncico en un grupo de pacientes pediátricos, que acuden al servicio de Odontopediatria del Centro Médico Docente la Trinidad, en el periodo comprendido entre marzo 2020 a agosto 2021, utilizando el índice IOTN.  Materiales y Métodos: Esta investigación es descriptiva y transversal, en la cual se determinó la necesidad de tratamiento ortodóncico mediante el componente dental del índice IOTN. La muestra fue seleccionada a conveniencia. Posterior a obtener consentimiento/asentimiento informado, se realizó la evaluación clínica y fotográfica a pacientes de 5 a 18 años, quienes tuvieran dentición mixta o permanente. Participaron 4 observadores. Los datos fueron registrados y analizados con variables descriptivas. Resultados: La muestra estuvo conformada por 46 pacientes, con distribución equitativa entre sexos. El 39% de la muestra presentó ninguna (28%) o poca (11%) necesidad de tratamiento; mientras que el 61% sí requiere tratamiento ortodóncico (necesidad moderada 33%, necesidad alta 28% y gran necesidad 4%). Los indicadores de maloclusión más prevalente fue la sobremordida (23,9%) y desplazamiento dentario (21,7%), Conclusión: El uso del índice IOTN refleja una elevada necesidad de tratamiento ortodóncico en los pacientes pediátricos estudiados, principalmente derivada de sobremordida profunda y apiñamiento dental.es-ES
