| dc.description | Introduction: Repeated exposure to an antigen generates a pathological reaction defined as hypersensitivity, which consists of an imbalance between the individual's immune response and the control mechanisms that limit it. Dentistry involves high-risk procedures for the appearance of occupational hypersensitivity; consequently, the objective of this research was to determine the prevalence of hypersensitivity to dental materials such as methacrylate, formaldehyde and latex in students, hygienists and professors of ULA Faculty of Dentistry ((known in Spanish as FOULA). Materials and methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 147 FOULA participants: 19 dentists, 23 dental hygienists and 105 Dental students. A mixed type questionnaire was applied, in a self-administered manner and with previous explanation of the objective of the research, between June and July 2019. The data collected were tabulated in the statistical package IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0, with which they were interpreted frequencies and percentages. Results: The prevalence of hypersensitivity to dental materials reported was 25.2% of the total study sample. There was a greater tendency to present allergic reactions to latex gloves among dental materials. The hygienists formed the group with the highest tendency to suffer from hypersensitivity to dental materials, followed by dentists and students in training. Conclusion: The prevalence of hypersensitivity to dental materials is directly related to the occupation and the time of repetitive exposure to the allergens present in the material. | en-US |
