No
muros. In Venezuela, the majority of single- and multi-unit family housing, building
structures intended for different uses as well as empty lots, are constructed and
delimited, respectively, using masonry walls. In some cases, significant attention is
given to the design of these masonry walls in order to achieve the desired
architectural effect. However, a large number of the masonry walls show structural
failures when constructed on expansive clay soils, as is the case in the city of Santa
Ana de Coro (located in the State of Falcon, Venezuela), which has large extents of
soils having the referenced characteristics. To address this problem, which occurs in a
large number of the masonry walls in the city, a research investigation was
undertaken titled: "MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR THE ANALYSIS AND
DESIGN OF MASONRY WALL FOUNDATION SYSTEMS RESTING ON
EXPANSIVE CLAy SOILS." The general objective of this investigation was to
identify a solution that guarantees the functionality, stability and safety of the
structural element in question over its useful life. At present, the problem is
mathematically represented and analyzed using a model in which the walls are
subjected to the forces from the existing dead-loads as well as the wind, as defined by
the COVENIN standard. However, this analysis model yields results that were not
rational. Accordingly, some tests were carried out in the field to determine the
characteristics and physical properties of the soi1. These field test results were
necessary to reproduce the actual working conditions of the soils beneath the masonry
wall foundations, and to arrive at the proposed mathematical model for the masonry
wall foundation systems in City of Santa Ana de Coro. The characteristics that define
the behavior of the clayey soils in the city of Santa Ana de Coro are very unique, and
there is little reference to them in the literature. There are no known studies that
incorporate in situ analyses to defme those soil characteristics, which implies they
have not been taken into consideration during design and construction, and hence the
reason for the frequent faiIures. The structural response for both the existing and
proposed model were analyzed using the SAP2000 version 3.3 finite element
software. Modeling with this software was done using solid elements in order to
analyze the deformations of the system under the acting forces. The proposed design
model for masonry wall foundation systems resting on clayey soils expansive
guarantees an adequate structural response, which helps to solve the serious damages
associated with the existing masonry walls.
