La batalla por el alma de América Latina: Una revisión crítica del papel de la religión en el continente

Abstract

Durante mucho tiempo el catolicismo fue el único punto de referencia cuando se trataba el tema de la religión cristiana en Latinoamérica. Este dominio se ha perdido en las últimas tres décadas, dando paso a un complejo escenario en el cual están presentes nuevas prácticas como son el pentecostalismo, el protestantismo evangélico, entre otras corrientes alternativas que se enfrentan para hacerse de un número mayor de seguidores. En esta batalla el enfoque de la economía religiosa es de utilidad para comprender la dinámica inmersa en este tema que es fuente de cambio social en el continente.

For a long time, the Roman Catholic Church was the reference point when one studied the issue of religion in Latin America, however, this predominance has lessened in the last three decades. The situation today is much more complex with new religious organizations and practices such as evangelical Protestantism, especially Pentecostalism coming to the fore and rapidly gaining followers at the expense of the Catholic Church. The religious economy approach is useful to understand the growing tensions between the differing religious actors as a source of social change in the continent.
