USO DE LAS PLANTAS MEDICINALES PARA EL TRATAMIENTO DE LA ENFERMEDAD PERIODONTAL: UNA REVISIÓN SISTEMÁTICA

Abstract

Introducción: La enfermedad periodontal es un proceso inflamatorio que afecta los tejidos de sostén del diente por la presencia de microorganismos. Las plantas medicinales se utilizan como tratamiento alternativo para el control de esta enfermedad debido a sus propiedades terapéuticas. Se requiere una revisión actualizada en el idioma español y con un mayor número de plantas, por ello, este estudio se plantea como objetivo describir el uso de las plantas medicinales para el tratamiento de la enfermedad periodontal con base en una revisión sistemática de la literatura. Metodología: Se realizó la búsqueda electrónica utilizando las fuentes de información: Medline a través de PubMed; bibliotecas electrónicas: SciELO, Biblioteca Virtual en Salud, Biblioteca Cochrane, el buscador académico Google académico, y en la Biblioteca “Jacobo Calanche” de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Los Andes. Se incluyeron ensayos clínicos y revisiones sistemáticas. Resultados: En los 55 estudios se encontró que las plantas son efectivas para el tratamiento de la enfermedad periodontal, siendo numerosos los estudios para la gingivitis. Conclusión: De acuerdo con la evidencia analizada las plantas medicinales son una buena alternativa para el tratamiento de la enfermedad periodontal.

Introduction: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory process that affects the supporting tissues of the tooth due to the presence of microorganisms. The medicinal plants are used as an alternative treatment for the control of this disease due to its therapeutic properties. An updated revision in the Spanish language and with a greater number of plants is required; therefore, this study aims to describe the use of medicinal plants for the treatment of periodontal disease based on a systematic review of the literature. Methodology: The electronic search was performed using the information sources: Medline through PubMed; electronic libraries: SciELO, Virtual Health Library, Cochrane Library, academic Google academic search engine, and the "Jacobo Calanche" Library of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Los Andes. Clinical trials and systematic reviews were included. Results: In the 55 studies it was found that the plants are effective for the treatment of periodontal disease, being numerous studies for gingivitis. Conclusion: According to the analyzed evidence, medicinal plants are a good alternative for the treatment of periodontal disease.
