    Abstract

This study was directed to assess the application of a manual on didactic strategies for the teaching of the chemical substances in sixth grade of primary education. Based on the action research methodology, the study involved a natural science teacher and her students from a school in Mérida city. Data were obtained through the observations of researchers and semi-structured interviews to the teacher and children applied in different phases of the study . Changes in the learning process were assessed through categorization and triangulation of participant’s views. The results showed the students became more motivated to construct concepts through experimentation and the teacher improved the role as mediator. Other changes were related to a greater depth in the teaching of the subject and to the increase in teacher-student and student-student interactions, which made the learning more participatory.
