Inventario rápido de los anfibios y reptiles del bosque ombrófilo del cerro Las Antenas, en la vertiente venezolana de la Sierra de Perijá

Abstract

La Sierra de Perijá es un ramal montañoso de la cordillera oriental de Los Andes y barrera limítrofe natural entre Colombia y Venezuela. A pesar del incremento en el número de publicaciones sobre su herpetofauna en la última década, el conocimiento sobre los anfibios y reptiles de este sistema montañoso aún es incipiente, particularmente en cuanto a inventarios de especies. Aquí presentamos los resultados del inventario rápido de herpetofauna del bosque ombrófilo del cerro Las Antenas, en la vertiente venezolana de Perijá, realizado en marzo de 2008. Se registraron 26 especies (9 anfibios y 17 reptiles), 27 % de ellas endémicas de Perijá (5 anfibios y 2 reptiles). De las especies halladas durante el inventario, cinco eran nuevas para la ciencia (todas actualmente descritas). Además, se obtuvieron dos nuevos registros para el país, un nuevo registro para el estado Zulia y el segundo registro para Perijá de otras tres especies (la mayoría de estos hallazgos fueron publicados en contribuciones separadas en años subsiguientes). Finalmente, se confirma la presencia de Anolis jacare en Perijá. Cinco especies de anfibios y una de lagarto se encuentran en categorías de riesgo, en tanto que el riesgo de extinción de 59 % de los reptiles aún no ha sido evaluado. Actualmente, la herpetocenosis del cerro Las Antenas está amenazada por la deforestación con fines agrícolas.

The Sierra de Perijá is a mountain spur of the Andean Cordillera Oriental and a natural boundary between Colombia and Venezuela. Despite the increasing number of publications on its herpetofauna in the last decade, the knowledge about the amphibians and reptiles of this mountain system is still incipient, particularly regarding inventories. Herein we present the results of a rapid assessment of the herpetofauna from the ombrophylous forest of Cerro Las Antenas, in the Venezuelan versant of Perijá, carried out on March 2008. We recorded 26 species (9 amphibians and 17 reptiles), 27 % of which are endemic from Perijá (5 amphibians and 2 reptiles). Among the species found during the inventory, five were new to science (all of them currently described). Additionally, we obtained two new records for the country, one new record for Zulia state, and the second record for Perijá of three other species (most of these findings have been published in separate contributions in subsequent years). Finally, we confirm the presence of Anolis jacare in Perijá. Five species of amphibians and one of lizard are in categories of risk, whereas the extinction risk has not yet been evaluated for 59 % of the reptiles. Currently, the herpetocenose of Cerro Las Antenas is endangered by deforestation for agricultural purposes.
