Aportes de un ninguneado: Arturo Costa Álvarez. Breve historia de un debate acerca de la naturaleza de la filología argentina

Abstract

En este artículo analizamos el modo en que Costa Álvarez concibió un objeto de estudio y un método de trabajo dentro de la incipiente filología argentina. Este lingüista fue una figura controversial del imaginario intelectual rioplatense del primer tercio del siglo XX. Su producción discursiva –básicamente centrada en la gramática y el diccionario como instrumentos de naturaleza didáctico-lingüística– se caracterizó por un fuerte afán de intervención glotológica (Di Tullio, 2009). Sin embargo, en tanto sus obras (y toda su investidura) fueron objeto de profundos cuestionamientos, sus aportes emergieron en una matriz textual sobrecargada de recelos académicos y de pujas por la posesión de la autoridad científica: diferentes autoridades universitarias porteñas y/o miembros del Instituto de Filología de Buenos Aires –Rojas, Castro, Alonso, etc.– devinieron agentes de peso en las representaciones que del filólogo platense luego trascendieron y en las interpretaciones que de sus propuestas a la postre se practicaron. Nuestro trabajo comprende el período que va entre 1923 y 1929. Desde una perspectiva historiográfica y según un criterio cronológico y temático (Swiggers, 2009), seleccionamos un abanico de intervenciones que conforman nuestro archivo (Arnoux & Bein, 2015); el mismo corresponde no solo a la producción de Costa Álvarez, sino también a la del grupo de intelectuales que entró en conflicto con él y que nos invita a presentarlo bajo el mote de “ninguneado”.

In this article we analyze the way in which Costa Álvarez devised an object of study and a working method within the emerging field of Argentine philology. This linguist was a controversial figure of the River Plate intellectual imaginary during the first third of the XXth century. His discursive production – basically focused on dictionaries and grammar as instruments of a didactic-linguistic nature – was characterized by a strong pursuit of glotological (Di Tullio, 2009) intervention. However, whereas his works (and all his investiture) were object of deep questionings, his contributions emerged in a textual matrix overburdened with academic misgivings and the bid for the scientific authority: different university authorities of Buenos Aires and/or members of the Institute of Philology – Rojas, Castro, Alonso, etc. – became important players in the representations of the philologist which then transcended and in the interpretations that were later made of his proposals. Our work covers the period 1923-1929. The range of interventions that make up our archive (Arnoux & Bein, 2015) were selected from a historiographical perspective and according to a chronological and thematic approach (Swiggers, 2009); this archive corresponds not only to Costa Álvarez’s production, but also to that of the group of intellectuals which came into conflict with him and invites us to present him under the nickname of “brought-to-naught”.
