A estas alturas, ni para los más escépticos, debe quedar duda alguna de la irrupción de BIM (Building Information Modeling) en el quehacer de la profesión de la ingeniería civil, sea por activa o por pasiva, o por el mero hecho de haber estado expuestos a los requerimientos de clientes o de otras disciplinas profesionales. De acuerdo al criterio de los entendidos, el impacto de BIM en el ámbito de las conocidas como profesiones AEC (por sus siglas del inglés Architecture, Engineering and Construction), es equiparable o incluso mucho más profundo al que tuvo lugar durante la irrupción de las tecnologías CAD (Computer Assited Design) durante la década de 1980, gracias entre otras cosas a la reducción de costos del hardware y software
