LAS ARTESANÍAS TRADICIONALES VENEZOLANAS A TRAVÉS DE CATEGORÍAS. UNA BASE PARA LA COMPRENSIÓN DE SU APORTE AL DISEÑO

Abstract

El presente trabajo muestra como el uso de categorías teóricas puede ayudar a arrojar luces sobre aspectos generalmente sobrestimados o desconocidos sobre las artesanías tradicionales de Venezuela, en aras de aportar orientaciones para su uso como fuente de inspiración para el diseño. Con este fin se ofrece una breve muestra de tres maneras distintas de categorizar (histórica, etiológica y teleológica), apoyada por hechos y ejemplos vinculados a los tres rubros artesanales más relevantes del país: alfarería, tejeduría (productos textiles y cestería) y trabajos en madera. La idea es resaltar algunas circunstancias históricas y culturales bajo las cuales dichos tipos de artesanía se han desarrollado, así como los modos locales de hacer y entender las cosas que cobran vida a través de sus repertorios de objetos.

The present paper shows how the use of theoretical categories can help to cast light on aspects generally underestimated or unknown about the traditional crafts of Venezuela, in order to provide clues for its use as a source of inspiration for designing. To this aim a brief flavor of three different ways of categorizing (historical, etiological and teleological) is provided, supported by facts and examples coming from the three main branches of the Venezuelan crafts: pottery, weaving (textile products and basketry) and woodcraft. The idea is to highlight some of the historical and cultural circumstances in which such crafts have been developed as well as the local ways of doing and understanding things that come to live through their repertoires of objects.
