Calidad de los productos y calidad medioambiental. ¿Enfoques divergentes?

Abstract

Durante mucho tiempo se ha pensado que la calidad de los productos y la calidad del ambiente natural son dos temas que se contraponen y que conducen a realidades excluyentes. Este artículo pretende demostrar que esto no es cierto. Según Porter y Van Der Linde (1995) “el debate, ya clásico, entre competitividad y ambiente ha sido incorrectamente estructurado. Por un lado, los ambientalistas se han enfrascado en una lucha por las regulaciones ambientales tratando de imponerlas a toda costa y, por el otro, las empresas tratando de demostrar la afectación de sus costos y por ende el perjuicio a su competitividad; dejando ambos a un lado los aportes que pueden realizar las innovaciones a la solución de los problemas ambientales” (Bustos, 2009, p. 131).

For a long time it has been thought that the quality of products and the quality of the natural environment are two conflicting issues that lead to mutually exclusive realities. This article aims to show that this is not true. According to Porter and Van Der Linde (1995), “the classic debate between competitiveness and the environment has been incorrectly structured. For one side, environmentalists have been involved in a fight for environmental regulations trying to impose them at all costs and, for the other side, companies trying to demonstrate the impact on their costs and therefore the damage to their competitiveness; leaving both aside the contributions that innovations can make to solving environmental problems” (Bustos, 2009, p. 131).
