dc.descriptionCon el propósito de caracterizar el ambiente de los cuerpos de agua corriente de la cuenca alta del río Chama, se evaluó el hábitat de 46 sitios en igual número de ríos durante la época de sequía en los años 1999, 2000 y 2001. Tres grupos de variables fueron medidas: a) Variables externas al cauce: altitud, pendiente del cauce, índice de hábitat y cobertura de vegetación; b) Variables hidrológicas: ancho del cauce, profundidad media, velocidad de la corriente, altura máxima del agua y llenura del cauce; y c) Variables fisicoquímicas: temperatura, conductividad, alcalinidad, dureza, pH, oxígeno disuelto y materia orgánica en suspensión. Los ríos fueron asociados a tres unidades ecológicas: Páramo, Selva Nublada y Bosques Bajos. Un análisis de componentes principales (ACP) demostró que son cuatro las características generales que condicionan la variabilidad ambiental de los ríos de la cuenca: la condición ecológica del hábitat; las características topográficas de la cuenca; las propiedades fisicoquímicas del agua; y las variables hidrológicas. Del análisis de estas características generales se concluye que: i) existe un gradiente altitudinal en las condiciones térmicas e hidrológicas que determina el establecimiento de grandes diferencias ambientales entre los ríos que drenan bajo diferentes unidades ecológicas; ii) la alta variabilidad en el tamaño de los cauces esta asociada a la topografía del terreno: y iii) la heterogeneidad en la composición química del agua de los ríos parece depender de la variabilidad geológica presente en la cuenca.es-ES
dc.descriptionWith the purpose of characterizing the environment of flowing water bodies in the upper watershed of the Chama River, the habitat of 46 sites in equal number of streams was evaluated during the dry season for the years 1999, 2000 and 2001. Three groups of variables were measured: a) variables external to the stream: elevation, slope, habitat index, and vegetation cover; b) hydrological variables: stream width, average depth, water velocity, maximum water level and volume; and c) physicochemical variables: temperature, conductivity, alkalinity, hardness, pH, dissolved oxygen and suspended organic matter. The streams were associated to three ecological units: Páramo, Cloud Forest and Montane Forests. A principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that four general characteristics condition the environmental variability of streams of the watershed: the ecological condition of the habitat; the topographic characteristics of the basin; the physicochemical characteristics of the water; and the hydrological variables. From the analysis of these general characteristics it was concluded that: i) there exists an elevation gradient for the thermal and hydrological characteristics that determine the establishment of large environmental differences among the streams that drain areas in different ecological units; ii) the high variability in the stream dimensions is associated to relief; and iii) the heterogeneity in water chemical composition seems to depend on the geological variation of the watershed.en-US
