The reproductive behaviour of populations of Espeletia spicata Sch. Bip. (Compositae), was studied during eight years in permanent plots, at 4,200m in the Cordillera de Mérida, The age at first reproduction is between 20 and 50 years, more frecuently at 20 years, after the high juvenile mortality stage. The values of fecundity (25,000-30,000 seeds by individual) and reproductive frecuency (0.33 years) do not change with plant size. The vegetative vigor was low in individuals at the first reproduction and in mature plants that do not reproduce in the studied interva1. This suggests that the reproduction needs a minimalleve1 of vegetative development. Within the population, the relative reproductive contribution was highest in indiduals with intermediate size which have the highest survivorship rates. At population leve1, the flowering rate and the production of inflorescenses change between consecutive years from 1 % to 77 %, and from one inflorescence to 1,600 inflorescences, respectively. At the individualleve1, the interannual rcproductivc scqucnce was irregular (in each plant) and asynchronic (betwccn plants). This high rcproductive variability could be related to internal energetic limitations or could be an adaptive response to interannual impredictability in the availability of resources.
