PASOS ARGUMENTATIVOS Y ESTRUCTURA DISCURSIVA EN EL PLANTEAMIENTO DEL PROBLEMA DEL ARTÍCULO DE INVESTIGACIÓN

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es explorar las estrategias argumentativas que se usan para plantear y justificar el problema de la investigación en una muestra de cinco artículos de revistas especializadas en estudios sociales. El propósito es mostrar cómo se relacionan las estrategias argumentativas con la estructura discursiva y qué recursos lingüísticos (evaluativos y evidenciales) sirven para plantear el problema. Nos apoyamos en el esquema argumentativo de Toulmin (2007) para examinar las estrategias argumentativas en las introducciones donde se plantea el problema de investigación. Para identificar los recursos lingüísticos, recurrimos a las teorías acerca del uso del lenguaje evaluativo y de las marcas evidenciales. Los resultados indican que los distintos componentes discursivos del planteamiento del problema requieren el uso de determinadas estrategias argumentativas y una recurrencia de ciertos recursos evaluativos. Precisar los recursos usados para argumentar el problema planteado facilita el aprendizaje de cómo redactar artículos de investigación y la elaboración de criterios para evaluar dichos artículos.

Formulating the research problem is one of the most complex tasks in academic writing. We explore the argumentative strategies used in the formulation and justification of the research problem in a sample of five articles published in social science journals. We intend to determine the relationship between argumentative strategies, discourse structure, and the linguistic resources (evaluative and evidential) used in formulating the research problem. We adopt Toulmin´s (2007) argumentative model in our analysis of argumentative strategies. We also examine the uses of evaluative expressions and evidential markers. Our findings show that the discursive components in the elaboration of the research problem are characterized by the use of particular types of argumentative strategies and the recurrent use of certain evaluative expressions. These findings can facilitate the learning process of how to write a research article as well as how to elaborate criteria for evaluating those articles.
