| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Demodex anterior blepharitis is a parasitic type infection that occurs frequently and is poorly diagnosed, is associated with alterations of the ocular surface and the tear film. The symptomatology is characterized by erythematous lid margins withs caly lesions, sebaceous material accumulated at the base of the lashes, red eye and even loss of lid margin architecture and its annexes. Treatments that have been implemented over the years, do not guarantee the complete eradication of the parasite, like Ivermectin and Doxycycline oral, topical application of steroid/antibiotic combinations, frequent grooming with non irritating topical agents, mercury oxide yellow 2% ointment and tea tree oil. This study seeks to demonstrate which is the most appropriate treatment for Demodex blepharitis, between the mercury oxide yellow and the tea tree oil. Methods: Prospective, randomized, pilot clínical, we evaluated patients with symptoms of Blepharitis and Demodex microscopic confirmation, were assigned to random groups of treatment and follow-up was perfomed for 45 days. Results: The parasíte was eradicated in 13 patients (81.3%) of 16 treated with tea tree oil, 85% with subjective feeling of improvement and 75% reduction of clinical signs at 15 days. The mercury oxide yellow eradicated the parasite in 3 of 13 patients (23.1 %), 33.3% with subjective feeling of improvement and 25% reduction of clinical signs at 15 days. Conclusions: The tea tree oil is more effective for the treatment of blepharitis and Demodex eradication. | en_US |
